COSTA CALMA - FUERTEVENTURA

Costa Calma had its first major tourist boom in 1984.  Costa Calma (the calm coast) lies about 80km south of the airport on the edge of the national park area of Jandia.

Costa Calma’s first hotel was built in 1977 but tourism did not really take off until the road from the capital Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable was completed and Costa Calma was properly marketed by the European holiday companies.  Today, of course, Costa Calma benefits from a life all of its own enjoyed by all nationalities.
Costa Calma beaches

One of the best parts of Costa Calma has to be the long sandy beach of Plana Barca to the southwest.  This particular area appeals toWindsurfers because of the strong off shore winds during the summer months.  Playa Sotovento is one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura with endless fine sand and that exquisite turquoise sea.  It is an extremely popular location for surfers and, in fact, the PWA Championship Wind Surfing Slalom and Kite Boarding World Cup are held here annually during the months of July and August.

Another fabulous and extremely secluded beach is at Playa El Cofete which is located about half an hour from Costa Calma.  Some of the terrain to get there is off-road and pretty bumpy but the trip is definitely worthwhile when you reach the point where El Cofete is seen for the first time.  Spectacular, magnificent and serene this beach really is one not to miss.
